Do My Products Need A Child-Resistant Cap Design?

Many parents and caregivers might prefer every jar to have a child resistant cap. As anyone who has looked after kids for any length of time can testify, it only takes a moment for a kid to get into something. But in reality, whether you need a child-resistant cap depends on the child-resistant cap regulations in your state. In some states non-child-resistant caps are perfectly fine whereas in other states child-proof caps are mandatory.

Child-resistant packaging is designed so that young children are unable to open the package without adult supervision or assistance (but they must also be easy to open for seniors). More specifically, child-resistant caps are designed to prevent children under the age of five from accessing products.

To test the efficacy of the child-proof jar lid, groups of 50 to 200 children, not more than 51 months old, were given ten minutes to open a child-proof package. For the first five minutes, the children try opening the package without any help. After the first five minutes, they are shown how to open it. If more than 80% of these children can then open the package, it is a failed test. For the packaging to pass the test for seniors, at least 90% of adults, aged between 50 and 70 years old, must be able to open the package within 5 minutes without any difficulty. They must also be able to reseal it with ease.
