Do My Products Need A Child-Resistant Cap Design?
Many parents and caregivers might prefer every jar to have a child resistant cap. As anyone who has looked after kids for any length of time can testify, it only takes a moment for a kid to get into something. But in reality, whether you need a child-resistant cap depends on the child-resistant cap regulations in your state. In some states non-child-resistant caps are perfectly fine whereas in other states child-proof caps are mandatory.
Child-resistant packaging is designed so that young children are unable to open the package without adult supervision or assistance (but they must also be easy to open for seniors). More specifically, child-resistant caps are designed to prevent children under the age of five from accessing products.
To test the efficacy of the child-proof jar lid, groups of 50 to 200 children, not more than 51 months old, were given ten minutes to open a child-proof package. For the first five minutes, the children try opening the package without any help. After the first five minutes, they are shown how to open it. If more than 80% of these children can then open the package, it is a failed test. The most common child-proof lid is the push and turn cap, of which we carry numerous that are fully certified as child-resistant.
For the packaging to pass the test for seniors, at least 90% of adults, aged between 50 and 70 years old, must be able to open the package within 5 minutes without any difficulty. They must also be able to reseal it with ease. To ensure that containers are child-resistant throughout their use, it is recommended the caps or lids are reusable jar lids that are easy to reseal after they are opened.
Tamper -evident containers indicate if the product has been opened or altered and also help protect children from accidentally consuming harmful products. Combining tamper-evident packaging with child-proof packaging creates an additional layer of safety and helps to maintain product integrity.
Customers want to buy safe-to-use products. A child-proof, tamper-evident cap demonstrates your concerns for your products' integrity but also your customer's well-being and safety. This can increase brand loyalty, which translates to increased sales.
As with much of our product line, child proof caps and jars can be customized with brand logos and names. Customization is a great way for brands to leverage unique self-promotion and compliance at the same time. Contact us for a quote if your preferred design is not on our website.
At Green Earth, you will find a great variety of caps that keep your product in compliance with your state laws.

Frequently Asked Questions About Jar Lids
How To Open Child-Proof Cap Lids
The child-proof cap lids known as ‘push down & turn’ caps are simple to open by following these steps:
- Place your palm on the cap and grasp the edges.
- Press firmly down on the container and twist the lid in the direction of the arrows.
- The lid should open.
When Were Child-Proof Caps Invented?
Nowadays, plenty of products are stored in child-resistant packaging. Some products, like over-the-counter medication, are required under federal law to be stored in child-resistant containers. Over half a century ago, child-resistant packaging was not yet around nor invented.
During the 1960s, Canadian medical doctor Henri J. Breault was working in the Windsor area of Ontario. Dr. Breault was the Chief of Pediatrics and Director of the Poison Control Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital. During his time at the hospital, Dr. Breault was treating many children who accidentally ingested harmful or even poisonous (in large amounts) medications, vitamins, and household solvents almost daily.
Data from that time shows that Canada dealt with 1,000 cases of childhood poisonings yearly with 100 deaths across the country resulting from such events. According to reports, Dr. Breault’s wife remembered her husband coming home late into the night from work and telling her, “You know, I’ve had it! I am tired of pumping children’s stomachs when they’re taking pills that they shouldn’t be having! I’ve got to do something about it.”
One of the first things Dr. Breault did was advocate and raise awareness to prevent accidental child poisonings. He created the Ontario Association for the Control of Accidental Poisonings (OACAP) to educate the public about the dangers of unintentional poisonings in children and prevent them.
Although his efforts helped a little bit, the accidental poisonings continued. In 1967, Dr. Breault patented the ‘Palm N’ Turn’ container, which he helped design with Peter Hedgewick, president of International Tool Limited Industries.
For the next several years, Dr. Breault campaigned for government policy to make the caps mandated. Today, his invention has helped save lives not just in Canada but around the world, too.
How Do Child-Proof Caps Work?
The child-proof lids are designed to be challenging to open for children under the age of five but easy to take off by adults and most seniors. For a cap to be certified as child-resistant, it goes through a series of assessments.
Different groups of children are given a certain amount of time to open the lid on their own and then again with directions. If over 80% of the children open the package, then the lid fails the child-resistant lid. All of the lids labeled as child-resistant on our website are fully certified by various independent and/or government entities.
